v_ponta.jpgVictor Ponta was prosecutor, then leader of the Social Democratic youth, and finally the one who managed to confederate the members of the party in order to defeat Mircea Geoana. As a politician, Victor Ponta is the creation of Adrian Nastase. He is the one who brought Ponta in the party and impose him as president of Youth Organization. "In profile he resembles Titulescu", said Nastase in 2002. The comparison brought Ponta the nickname "little Titulescu".

Ponta entered the politics in 2001 on the invitation of Adrian Nastase. Ponta was his assistant at Public International Law Department. Later, Ponta said that the prime minister was looking for a replacement of Ovidiu Grecea from the Supervising Committee.
The present head of SDP graduated the Faculty of Law at Bucharest University. Till 1998 he worked as a prosecutor at Prosecution Department of the First Instance of District 2 Bucharest and then, between 1998 and 2002, he was prosecutor at Prosecutor's Office Attached to the Supreme Court of Justice - Anticorruption, Criminal Prosecution and Criminology Section. In 2000 he obtained a Master's degree in International Criminal Law at University of Catania, Sicily and for a year, between 2000 and 2001, he was coordinator of Office for Combating Money Laundering.
In 2003, he becomes doctor in International Criminal Law and in July same year becomes vice-president of SDP, holding this position till July 10, 2004, when reorganization took place in the party by suspending the Permanent Delegation and organizing a Coordinating Bureau.

In November 2003 is elected President of the Social-Democratic Youth, holding this position till November 18, 2006, when he hands over his job in favour of Nicolae Banicioiu. On December 10, 2006, he is elected vice-president of the Social Democratic Party.

Inconvenient character in SDP

Ponta was not a convenient character in SDP, often having outbreaks concerning promotions in the party of incompetent people and people with image problems, and the best example is the rivalry with Marian Vanghelie.

He and the vice-president Vasile Dancu have been nominated to party penalty and even exclusion because they criticized in public the leaders of SDP and the political strategy after failing in the attempt to suspend Traian Basescu.
As for the governmental activity, between 2001 and 2004, during SDP government, Victor Ponta was secretary of state, head of the Government's Supervising Committee. In 2008, during Emil Boc government, Ponta is appointed mandatory minister in relation to the Parliament. Ponta had a criticized attitude towards the Executive because of the frequent tensions between the government partners Social Democratic Party and Democratic Liberal Party.
In December 2004, is elected SDP deputy in Gorj couty and after parliamentary election, in November 2008, is elected for the second time in that position.
He became vice-president of Chamber of Deputies in September 2006 and held this position until February 5, 2007, when Eugen Nicolicea replaced him.
In 2002, he received Faithful Service National Order - rank of Knight, after a year he became Doctor in International Criminal Law at Bucharest University and in 2004 he received Della Stella Della Solidarieta Italiana Order.
