muzeu3.jpgOnce a building yard was placed in the area of Mangalia Spa Sanatorium, a series of archaeological discoveries were brought to the public attention.

"The digging was made in 2007. We searched the area at that time but, as the works were stopped from various reasons, the area remained fenced and our findings could not be seen, in the proper meaning of the word, by the citizens" declared dr. Mihai Ionescu, the one who, two years ago, brought to light Greek architecture items.

"While performing works for archaeological preserving, as required by the beneficiary of the building rising there, in that area, we found an ancient channel, from the Hellenistic period, and also an old well. The National Commission for Archaeology together with the National Commission of Historical Monuments decided to reconsider, on 13th of May this year, the state of these findings. Most probably, the vestiges either will be manually removed from the area  and will be taken to Callatis Museum, or we will entrust them to the owner of the building to be constructed on that site, in order to be exhibited in the area of the future house", dr. Mihai Ionescu declared.

Specialists of "Callatis" Archaeology Museum in Mangalia have recently made another series of discoveries in the settlements developing their activity. On Mihai Viteazu St, there were found the foundation and the walls of some houses from Hellenistic period, and in Dobrogea I neighbourhood, Neolithic items were found.  Among the findings, we may see Neolithic amphorae, bowls and tools, and also a coin with the head of Alexander the Great.
